Colleges in Missouri

Schools in Missouri that offer higher education include the University of Missouri system, public universities, private colleges and universities, community colleges, theological seminaries and schools of special focus. Missouri colleges and universities operate under the direction of the Missouri Department of Higher Education. This agency administers student financial assistance to help students pay for colleges in Missouri through various grant, scholarship and loan programs.

Public Missouri colleges and universities in the University of Missouri system include 13 baccalaureate universities and 20 associate's colleges. The largest of all Missouri schools of higher education is the University of Missouri in Columbia. It is also the flagship of colleges in the state. Other public universities that are administered by the university system are the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the University of Missouri-St Louis and the Missouri University of Science and Technology.

Missouri colleges that are not part of the University of Missouri system are: Missouri State University in Springfield, Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Truman State University in Kirksville, the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg and Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. The private universities in the state are Washington University in St. Louis, Rockhurst University in Kansas City and Saint Louis University. The rest of the schools in Missouri for higher learning include various junior colleges, universities of religious affiliations, private universities, seminaries and trade schools.

Five of the top-ranked Missouri colleges are the College of the Ozarks, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Saint Louis University, Rockhurst University and the University of Missouri at Columbia.

The College of the Ozarks is a private Christian liberal arts Missouri college that does not participate in any Federal loan programs. Located in the town of Point Lookout, the 1,000 acre campus requires full-time students to work to cover the cost of most of their tuition and school expenses.

The University of Science and Technology is located in Rolla. It has the distinction of being the first tech school west of the Mississippi. It is popular for the outdoor activities provided in the beautiful Ozarks.

Saint Louis University is a private Jesuit college. It is known for its small class size. The ratio of students to faculty is 13:1. Students are from all 50 states and 90 countries. Rockhurst University in Kansas City is another private

Jesuit college with a low student-to-teacher ratio at 12 students to one instructor.

The University of Missouri at Columbia is a public research university. The largest of all Missouri colleges, it is a member of the Association of American Universities because of its strong research programs.

Economy

In 2006, the Bureau of Economic Analysis estimated Missouri's gross state product(GSP)at $225.9 billion and personal per capita income at #32,705 ranking 26th in the nation. The state's major industries are transportation equipment, aerospace, food processing, chemicals, electrical equipment, printing and publishing, light manufacturing and beer.

Missouri's agricultural products are important to the nation. It ranks sixth in the production of hogs for pork and seventh in cattle for beef. Other products are soybeans, dairy products, corn, hay, poultry, cotton, sorghum, eggs and rice. The number of farms was second only to Texas in 2001 with 108,000 throughout the state. The state also has a wine industry that is growing rapidly.

Missouri is the leading US state for the mining of lead. The state also ranks near the top for the production of lime, Portland cement's key ingredient. The science and biotechnology field is growing and providing jobs for the state's residents. Monsanto in St' Louis is the nation's largest gene company and employs many workers.

Missouri is the only US state that has two federal reserve banks. Tourism and wholesale/retail trade also provides jobs. In 2012, the unemployment rate was 7.3 percent, lower than the national average of 8.2 percent.
